What is Berachain?

Berachain is an innovative Layer 1 blockchain platform that stands out due to its unique integration of the Proof of Liquidity consensus mechanism, designed to align the incentives for network security with liquidity provision. It has received funding co-led by Brevan Howard Digital and Framework Ventures, with other notable participants including Polychain Capital, Hack VC, Samsung Next, and Hashkey Capital.

Here's a detailed look:

• EVM Compatibility: Berachain is built to be compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which means it can support smart contracts and dApps written for Ethereum, facilitating easier migration and interoperability.

• Built on Cosmos SDK: While it leverages the Cosmos SDK for its infrastructure, which provides benefits like scalability and interoperability between blockchains, Berachain introduces its own twists with the PoL consensus.

• Proof of Liquidity: This consensus mechanism is central to Berachain's operation. Unlike traditional Proof of Stake (PoS) where staking is directly linked to network security, PoL requires participants to provide liquidity to Berachain's native DeFi applications (like an AMM DEX, perps exchange, and lending platform) to contribute to network security. This mechanism aims to solve issues like fractional liquidity in DeFi by ensuring that the network's security is tied to its liquidity.

• Tri-Token System: Berachain employs three native tokens:

  • Bera (BERA): The native gas token used for transaction fees.

  • Honey (HONEY): A stablecoin used within the ecosystem.

  • Bera Governance Token (BGT): A non-transferable token that users earn by providing liquidity and staking, used for governance and earning rewards.

• Community and Culture: Berachain has cultivated a strong community, initially growing from an NFT project called Bong Bears. This community-driven approach is reflected in its quirky branding and engagement strategies, emphasizing memes and a playful approach to serious blockchain technology.
